Primary Class
A class of children between the ages of 3 and 6 years old meets five days a week from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m.  The children are ready for a larger group as they develop social behavior, language, motor coordination, and perceptual skills.  The mixed-age group provides social interaction opportunities for the differing maturity and interest levels.  Children typically enter the class at the beginning of the cycle and remain with the group for the full three years until they are ready for the Elementary program.  The program includes preparation for reading, writing and math through the use of Montessori concrete materials. Children in their last year of primary typically attend the Extended Day program.

Primary Extended Day
The children in the third year of the Primary class, usually five-years-old, are ready to extend their morning work time.  Along with the developing academic skills, the children are forming cooperative peer relationships and an interest in group projects.  These children bring lunch and continue their day until 3:00 p.m.  During the afternoon session, the children are expected to focus on complex and lengthy lessons especially involving the Montessori writing, reading, geography, science, and math materials.  Self-discipline and independence are encouraged and expected at this age.

Day House Program
Day House is a nurturing safe environment incorporating Montessori principles in a before and after school program.  Both the primary and elementary Day House programs provide a home-like atmosphere in which children participate in the care of the environment and participate in enriching activities such as art, music, sports, cooking, and projects.

The ground rules include respect for others and the environment, cooperative behavior, independent self-care and polite social interactions.  Activities are organized according to the characteristics of each age group and procedures are consistent with those in the academic school day classes.

Alcuin's preschool program features a Montessori curriculum and montessori materials in a loving environment.

"The child has other powers than ours, and the creation he achieves is no small one; it is everything." - Maria Montessori
